How to Kick Any Bad Mood to the Curb

Life isn’t perfect. We all know that. Sometimes the online community fools us into believing that most people’s lives are just awesome all the time. Well at least it looks that way by looking at your friends’ feeds… traveling, smiling selfies, top-notch fashion gloating, posting anything and everything in their life that just looks totally sweet. “Man, their life most be awesome,” you think to yourself. But let’s be real, life is really tough sometimes. Other less extreme times, you may just be having a bad night. That’s ok. We are humans. We are happy. We are sad. We are so-so. That’s life, not what social media shows us.

Tonight, I was just having an off night. I cannot pin point a reason why. I got home from work at a decent time. I came home to my amazing wife and the cutest dog in the world. My wife made me a great dinner. We watched one of our favorite Netflix shows. Everything seems great, huh? There’s no reason to be down, right? Yes, you would be right in thinking that. But the devil has a skillful way of getting us down. I was in that mood. You know it very well. We all have them. I would love to tell you that every time I get in a mood like this, I run to the Scriptures. Sometimes I just want to drown in my sorrows. However, running to Jesus and His word is exactly what we should do.

Let me just share a little with you on what the bible passage I read and how the Lord took my bad mood and kicked it in its…butt. The word gratitude came into my mind. This led me to Colossians 3. This chapter talks about when we become born-again Christians we put on a new self and we put to death our old self. What’s my old self? The way I use to live. The way I use to live by my flesh’s desire and for earthly things. Here are examples the chapter tells us are earthly things in us: sexual immorality, impurity, evil desire, covetousness, anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk, and lying. The Scripture says we are to put these to death for the wrath of God is upon them! Stay with me…

We are to put on our new self, who is renewed in the knowledge after the image of our creator, God. Did you read that right? We are renewed in the image of God, the creator of the universe. The Almighty God is renewing us in His image. I can’t reiterate that enough. If that’s not enough to put you in a good mood, continue along with me. So what does this new self look like? It looks like a compassionate heart, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, and forgiveness, which are all bound in perfect harmony with love. We are to let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts and let the Word of God dwell in us. And finally… in all we do, whether in our speech or actions, we should do it in the name of the Lord Jesus while giving thanks. How can I be in a bad mood and be doing it in the name of Jesus while being thankful? I can’t. You see that’s the thing. When I start to focus on gratitude, the name of Jesus and living out my new self; it’s almost impossible to stay in that mood.

I choose gratitude tonight. I choose Jesus. He gives me joy. Until next time bad mood…
